India Takes A Big Leap In Megawatt Charging: High Tech Development Facility Inaugurated at LWT Visakhapatnam, India – 5th December 2024.
A groundbreaking achievement in power electronics is set to revolutionize high-speed charging for electric vehicles such as trucks, maritime vessels, and aviation systems. The successful demonstration of a Megawatt-Scale Medium Voltage Charger, powered by cutting-edge Solid-State Transformer (SST) technology, marks a transformative leap in the global energy landscape.
This Joint Development Program between Lotus Wireless Technologies (LWT), India, and the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT)—highlights India’s growing capability to invest in, development of advance cutting-edge technologies, which is undertaken only by few companies worldwide.
Under the guidance of Professor Dr.Markus Makoschitz and his team from AIT Austria, the SST design and engineering has been achieved. Their efforts have contributed to indigenizing the technology, enabling the integration of major local components, paving the way for the mass production of megawatt-scale EV chargers in India.
Dr.Friederich Kupzog, a leading authority in energy systems in Europe and Head of Energy at AIT Vienna, Inaugurated the LWT Medium Voltage Lab and remarked: “This collaborative success highlights the synergy between India’s detailed engineering and mass manufacturing capabilities and Austria’s innovative expertise, advancing transformative and sustainable energy technologies globally.”
Dr.Kaushik Basu a leading power electronics expert from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), who also witnessed the demonstration, commented: “This marks the beginning of medium-voltage Solid State Transformer development in the country. It is an excellent example of leveraging global partnerships between institutes and industry to create indigenous capabilities in advanced technologies.”
